Typical assignments include: Enforcing customs, immigration, and agriculture laws and regulations. Facilitating the flow of legitimate trade and travel. Conducting inspections of individuals and conveyances. Determining the admissibility of individuals for entry into the United States. Preventing the illegal entry of individuals and prohibited goods and the smuggling of illegal drugs and other contraband. Benefits include annual base salaries ranging from $61,111 to $124,443 per year, plus up to $45,000 in overtime pay. Officers are eligible to select from an array of federal employment benefits, including health, dental, and other insurance plans, generous annual and sick leave, and participation in the Thrift Savings Plan. Additionally, some duty locations offer recruitment incentives of 15% to 25% of salary each year for the first three years of employment. Qualifications include a minimum of one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, which includes detaining suspected violators, enforcing laws, utilizing intelligence techniques, and conducting interviews. Other requirements include U.S. citizenship, primary U.S. residency for at least three of the last five years, and age restrictions.
